Getting here and Getting about:

> Askernish is about 4 miles north-west from Lochboisdale, which is the port for the Caledonian MacBrayne (Calmac) car ferry from Oban (on some days via Barra).
> The Calmac ferry from Uig (Isle of Skye), comes to Lochmaddy, (Isle of North Uist), about 39 miles to the north of Askernish.
> Causeways connect all the islands from Eriskay in the south to Berneray in the north. There are short vehicle inter-island ferries linking Eriskay with Barra, Berneray with Harris.
> Benbecula Airport (Balivanich, Isle of Benbecula) with Flybe/Loganair flights via Glasgow, is 24 miles north.
> Flybe/Logainair flights to Barra from Glasgow land on the beach (the world’s only scheduled flights to do so), with bus or taxi and Calmac ferry connections to Eriskay and thus South Uist.
> Details of taxis, vehicle rental and public transport serving the airports is available from the airport web pages.
> There are generally taxis waiting to meet the Calmac ferries at Lochboisdale and Lochmaddy ferry terminals, and on a similar basis at Benbecula airport. Elsewhere and at other times you would probably need to phone. (Angus O’Henley 01878 700617).
> You can hire a car at Lochboisdale (Laing Motors 01878 700267) or Benbecula (ask car hire).
> Askernish bus stop (by the main road) is on the main island bus route, with regular bus services connecting Eriskay in the south with Berneray in the north. Using connecting buses you explore the crofting townships and back roads of Uist.
> Bicycles can be hired from Rothan at Howmore (South Uist).

Arriving - on the beach - by plane from Glasgow

A popular and more adventurous alternative to Benbecula airport is to fly from Glasgow to Barra, landing at the world’s only beach airport. Buses/taxis and the Barra-Eriskay ferry connect to South Uist.
